Schistosomiasis snails. Aquatic snails (Bulinus globosus),intermediate hosts for the parasitic fluke Schistosoma haematobium, the cause of the disease schistosomiasis in humans. Schistosome eggs expelled from infected humans enter local lakes and rivers, and hatch into larvae (miracidia) which infect these snails. Inside the snails they multiply and develop into cercariae, which leave the snails and infect humans who are in the water. The presence of the adult flukes in the blood vessels around the bladder can cause kidney and liver damage if left untreated | |
