| Dust mite suckers. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the paranal suckers of a male dust mite (Dermatophagoides sp.) During mating,the male dust mite will mount onto the back of the female and rotate to face the opposite direction. He is held onto her by the two paranal suckers (centre) that are located on the underside of his abdomen. Once in position,the penis,which is normally hidden beneath the paragynal lips becomes erect through haemolymphatic (body fluid) pressure and penetrates the female's genital opening.
