Sheep tick. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a sheep tick (Ixodes ricinus). This is a bloodsucking parasite of animals and humans. Its sensory pedipalps (lower left) are seen shielding its specialised mouthparts, which are used to pierce the host's skin. Hairs on the pedipalps locate the host by detecting air-borne vibrations. Ixodes sp. can transmit Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacterium that causes Lyme disease. This disease is characterized by fever and joint inflammation. Magnification: x27 at 6x7cm size | |
