Dust mite. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the house dust mite,Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus on woven household fabric. This mite has eight legs, with the head at lower left. It has an unsegmented, rounded body. It's mouthparts are adapted to feeding on the dead scales of human skin found in household dust. Dust mites are relatives of spiders and scorpions. They are smaller than a full stop and therefore invisible to the naked eye. Millions of dust mites live inside furniture and on fabric in the average home. The dead bodies and excrement of dust mites can cause humans to suffer allergic reactions. Magnification: x131 at 5x7cm size | |
