Dust mite. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the house dust mite,Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus. This mite has eight legs of which four legs are seen, with the head between them. The mite has an unsegmented, rounded body. It's mouthparts are adapted to feeding on the dead scales of human skin found in household dust. Dust mites are relatives of spiders and scorpions. They are smaller than a full stop and therefore invisible to the naked eye. Millions of dust mites live inside furniture and on fabric in the average home. The dead bodies and excrement of dust mites can cause humans to suffer allergic reactions. Magnification: x315 at 5x7cm size | |
