Dust mite faeces. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of dust mite faeces - a major cause of asthma and allergy to household dust. Dust mites (Dermatophagoides sp.) are tiny,eight- legged relatives of spiders that feed on the dead scales on human skin in household dust. Smaller than full stops, they are invisible to the naked eye but exist in their millions throughout the home, crawling through the fabric of furniture in search of food. The average double bed contains about two million dust mites of various species. Inhaled fragments of their dead bodies and faeces can trigger an immune response in some sufferers of asthma and dust-allergy. Magnification unknown | |
