Dust mite. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of a dust mite (Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus) on a flake of dandruff. Dust mites are tiny,eight- legged relatives of spiders that feed on the dead scales on human skin in household dust. Smaller than full stops, they are invisible to the naked eye but exist in their millions throughout the home, crawling through the fabric of furniture in search of food. The average double bed contains about two million dust mites of various species. Fragments of their dead bodies and excrement are thought to be a major cause of asthma and allergy to household dust.
