Scanning electron micrograph of the soft-bodied mite Acarus siro (or Tyroglyphus farinae),also known as the meal mite. This species is a common pest of granaries, mills & kitchens, feeding particularly on grains & cereals. They reproduce rapidly under good conditions; when unfavourable conditions prevail they form a resting stage which can survive for two years or more. Two mites are seen in this miniature soil landscape; one is disappearing into the background. They are grazing on a rich pasture of diatoms (elongated shapes),which have formed over the surface of the soil. A nematode is also visible at right.
