Tarantula fang. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a fang of a Mexican red-kneed tarantula (Brachypelma smithi). Tarantulas are poisonous spiders that have two hollow fangs that are used to inject venom into their prey. The prey is usually a small insect. The venom takes effect immediately, paralysing the insect and liquifying it,allowing the spider to suck out the resulting fluid. The fangs are powerful, and can penetrate human fingernails. The venom causes a painful bite in humans, but is not fatal. B. smithi has a body length of around 10 centimetres. It is nocturnal, found in deserts in Mexico and the southern USA.
