Spider spinnerets. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the spinnerets of an unidentified spider (order Araneae). The spinnerets are used to manipulate silk extruded from the silk glands. This may be to spin a web,or attach an anchor line. Some spiders throw a net of silk threads to capture prey. The silk is a fibrous protein that is extruded as a liquid but sets hard, being stronger than steel, weight for weight. Magnification: x125 at 6x7cm size | |
