House spider (Tegenaria gigantea),macrophotograph. The spider's eight eyes (black, centre) can be seen on its head. The sensory palps (upper centre) are similar in function to insect antennae but are in fact modified legs attached to the head. In males they possess a swollen bulb-shaped attachment, used to place sperm in the female's genital opening during copulation. These spiders usually inhabit houses and other buildings and are found throughout Britain and Europe. Magnification: x2 at 35mm size | |
