Light micrograph of the chelicerae of an unident- ified spider. The chelicerae are paired feeding appendages lying in front of the mouth, each of which bears a poison fang (claw-like structure) & a row of cheliceral teeth (serrated structure). Within the basal segment of each chelicera & occupying part of the head is a sac containing the poison. A duct leads from the sac to a small aperture at the tip of the fang, through which the poison is injected into the spider's prey. The venom not only paralyses the prey but also begins the process of digestion. The cheliceral teeth are used to grind up the paralysed victim. Magnification: x16 at 6x4.5cm size | |
