The aquatic spider,Argyroneta aquatica, photographed next to its air-filled retreat. A. aquatica is the only spider which lives permanently below water. It swims and hunts in the water, but retires to the retreat to consume its prey. The retreat is a bell-shaped bag of silk which the spider fills with air carried from the surface. The spider goes to the surface and, with a flick from one of its rear legs, traps a thin layer of air in a bubble around its abdomen (as seen here). It then returns to the retreat and brushes the air off again. Several trips are needed to fill the retreat | |
