Caterpillar head and front part of body, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Caterpillars (order Lepidoptera) are the larval stage of the life cycle of a butterfly or moth. A caterpillar is an eruciform larva, one that has a well- developed head and mouth (upper centre). The three pairs of true legs (centre to lower right) are seen. Pseudo-legs along the rest of the body provide a firm grip. Most caterpillars eat leaves, growing until they are ready to pupate. This may involve the spinning of a cocoon, from which the adult insect (imago) emerges. Magnification: x25 at 6x7cm size | |
