Compound eye of a bee. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of numerous lenses making up the surface of a compound eye from a honey bee (Apis sp.). These lenses are called ommatidia and are covered in protective hairs. A compound eye is not very good at distinguishing detail,but it does enable the detection of tiny movements. The honey bee produces and stores liquefied sugar (honey),and constructs colonial nests out of wax secreted by the workers in the colony
