Gnat head. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a gnat,a small type of fly (order Diptera),seen from the side. The compound eye (large,red) has many small lenses (ommatidia,round). A large antenna (centre right) is one of two mounted between the eyes (other antenna hidden behind this one). The antennae are sensory organs used for touch and smell. The gnat's mouthparts are seen below its eye. On top of the head is a raised lump (blue),which is one of the simple eyes (ocelli) found on flies. Sensory hairs are also seen
