Housefly proboscis. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the tip of the proboscis (mouthparts) of a housefly (Musca domestica). The proboscis is used for piercing and sucking up food. A housefly will feed on decaying matter,as well as human food,often transferring disease- causing organisms from one to the other.
