Weevil head. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of an endangered fungus weevil (Notioxenus sp.). The mouthparts are at lower right,and one of the compound eyes is at upper left (purple). One of the antennae (sensory structures) is attached to the head to the right of the eye,and branches down to lower left. This weevil is endemic (found nowhere else) to the small Atlantic island of St Helena,where the delicate balance between the beetle and its fungus host highlights the fragile nature of the wildlife on the island
