Fungus weevil foot. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the tip of the leg of a fungus weevil (Notioxenus sp.). The end of an insect leg is called the tarsus. The tarsus itself has several segments,and here ends in a pretarsus that is mostly a hairy pad (arolium) and also two small claws (centre and far left). The pad is used for gripping smooth surfaces,the claws for rough surfaces. This weevil is closely associated with a fungus,making it sensitive to environmental changes. It is endemic (found nowhere else) to the small Atlantic island of St Helena,where it is now endangered
