| False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the green peach aphid,Myzus persicae,a parthenogenetic female,feeding on the leaf of the Marvel of Peru,Mirabilis jalapa. In large numbers it is an economic pest,infesting crops such as the potato. The aphid is also a major carrier of virus diseases,which it transmits while feeding on sugary substances manu- factured in the leaves (as here). It inserts its stylet (a needle-like tube) into the leaf in search of the sugar-containing cels. The crinkly leaf epidermal cells are indicative of a heavily infested leaf.
