Light micrograph of several Bdelloid rotifers Rotaria sp. seen next to three "slipper-shaped" Paramecia (left) (single celled organisms, more primitive than rotifers). "Bdelloid" describes the looping leech-like motion by which Rotaria moves. Rotifers are allied to roundworms. They are usually freshwater organisms though a few marine species are known. Rotaria can propel itself freely through the water, with its corona of cilia extended to catch prey organisms. Magnification x25 (at 35mm size) | |
