Liver flukes. Light micrographs of transverse sections through the male (top) and female (bottom) body areas of an adult liver fluke (Fasciola hepatica). The liver fluke,a hermaphrodite trematode worm and endoparasite,infects sheep,cattle and humans,and can cause liver damage and death. The top section,through the male area,shows dark purple circular areas which are the testes containing sperm. The bottom section,through the female area,shows central circular cavities (parts of the uterus) that contain eggs (black). Magnification: x36 when printed at 10 centimetres across
