Schistosome parasite head. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of an adult male Schistosoma mansoni parasitic fluke, cause of the disease bilharzia (schistosomiasis). This fluke lives in the veins of the intestines and bladder, attaching itself to blood vessel walls using a suction pad (centre). A female (not seen) lives in the groove on the male's back (lower left). It ingests blood cells through its mouth (upper right). Schistosome eggs pass into water in urine and faeces. The larvae produced can infect humans through their skin. Bilharzia is endemic in tropical countries, and causes liver and kidney damage. It is treatable with drugs | |
