Schistosoma bovis. Light micrograph of adult flukes of the species Schistosoma bovis,a cause schistosomiasis in ruminants. The female fluke is the thinner organism, and lives in a cleft on the thicker male, where her eggs are continually fertilised. Flukes inhabit blood vessels of the small intestine and bladder, releasing their eggs into faeces or urine to contaminate freshwater. The eggs hatch into larvae which penetrate certain snails. The snails emit further larvae into the water and infection of ruminants occurs by contact with the water. Infection causes diarrhoea, emaciation, haemorrhage and anaemia, and may be fatal.
