| Macrophotograph of a group of green hydra polyps,Hydra viridis,attached to a strand of water weed. The 'head' of each hydra consists of a mouth surrounded by a number of tentacles,used to capture passing water fleas & algal cells. The green coloration of the polyps is due to the presence of an algal symbiont. In good feeding conditions hydra reproduce asexually by budding off daughter polyps. In poor conditions eggs & sperm are released into the water & fertilization occurs. Hydra are remarkable in their ability to regenerate themselves when damaged: a polyp cut in to ten pieces will regrow to form ten new polyps | |
