Amoeba proteus. Light micrograph of the single celled protozoan Amoeba proteus "walking" using it's false feet. The blunt protuberances at left frame are known as false feet (or pseudopodia) with which the cell moves. The body of the cell, coloured red and pink, consists of a naked mass of protoplasm. The amoeba extends a pseudopod in the direction it "wishes" to go,anchors it and pulls itself forward by contracting it's cell body. Movement can be to engulf food which is stored within the cell as a vacuole. Magnification x85 at 35mm size | |
