| Ciliate protozoan. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a type of Stentor,a freshwater ciliate protozoan. These are the largest protozoans found in fresh water. Some species reach 2 millimetres in length. They have a trumpet-like opening (upper left) surrounded by a rim of cilia (not seen). The cilia beat to create a current of water that draws food inside,for example bacteria (purple). When sedentary,Stentor are usually long and slender,but when swimming they become more oval and the posterior becomes narrower as pictured here. Some Stentor are green in colour because they contain symbiotic green algae | |
