| Spirochona protozoa. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Spirochona gemmipara protozoa (single-celled animals). It is found on the gills of crustaceans when adult,as here. When young it is a free-swimming cell. Its mouth is at the top of its tube-like body,and it uses cilia (hairs) to waft food particles towards it. Protozoa such as this are being used in biotechnology research at Axiva (part of Aventis) in Frankfurt,Germany. They are being studied to see if they can be used to produce useful biologically active chemicals such as enzymes,antibiotics and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Magnification unknown | |
