Paramecium. Light micrograph of a freshwater protozoan,Paramecium sp. Short hairs known as cilia are seen around the edges of the protozoan enabling it to swim with an upwards, spiralling motion. The protozoan is an elongated oval shape, the granular cell contents appear red, with a clear cell membrane. At centre is the dark red mass of the cell's nucleus. Paramecium are found mainly in stagnant ponds, feeding on bacteria & plant particles. They breed by transverse cell division into 2 identical cells. Conjugation occu- rs when 2 paramecia fuse to facilitate mixing of genetic material. Magnification:x170 at 35mm size | |
