SEMs of ciliate protozoan consume fellow ciliate
Second in a sequence of 4 false-colour scanning electron micrographs (SEMs) showing the ciliate protozoan Didinium nasutum (right) attacking & consuming fellow ciliate Paramecium sp. The barrel-shaped Didinium has 2 girdles of locomotory cilia,& a prominent snout which is used as a probing & seizing organ during feeding. The snout is reinforced by rod-like structures which hold fast the prey. In this micrograph,the Didinium grips the Paramecium,almost twice its size,near the latter's mouth. The Didinium's snout & gullet expand enormously in preparation for the meal. Magnification: x210 at 35mm size. Gold tint. Ref.: MICROCOSMOS,figure 3.8,page 46
