Light micrograph of Paramecium bursaris,a member of the species of green paramecia. The green colouration is due to the presence of unicellulate green algae which form organic substances & produce oxygen through photosynthesis. In light- favourable conditions the paramecium is able to exist on the products of the algae & has no need to ingest food independently. As a result, the behaviour of the paramecium has adapted to accommodate the light requirements of the algae. A fringe of cilia, fine hairs used in locomotion,is visible around the edge of the cell. Magnification: x128 at 35mm size. Microcosmos P.192 Technical Appendix, fist of four pictures illustrating LM illumination | |
