Solar-powered house. This house uses solar energy to be completely self-sufficient for heating and electricity. The building has a wall of transparent insulation on the south side for direct heating by the sun (passive solar heating). It heats its water with solar collectors and uses solar panels (photovoltaic cells) to generate electricity. Electricity is used to split water into hydrogen and oxygen by electrolysis. These gases are stored and used for cooking or to generate electricity in a fuel cell when there is not enough solar energy available. This demonstration house was completed in 1992.
