Domestic waste handling at an incinerator. Use of a grab-claw to move piles of domestic waste to be burnt in an incinerator's furnace. This incinerator uses municipal solid waste (MSW) such as paper and plastics,as opposed to sludge from wastewater. The energy from burning the waste is used to power turbines and generate electricity. Incineration of domestic waste reduces the need to use fossil fuels to produce energy, and reduces the amount of waste sent to landfill sites. This is the Ivry Paris XIII incinerator,in Paris,France. Opened in 1969,it is one of the oldest such incinerators in the world. It burns nearly 700,000 tons of waste a year. The power capacity is 63 megawatts (MW) | |
