| Animal space research. Pigtail monkey (Macaque nemestrina),of the type used by NASA for Biosatellite flights. The monkey is seed here demonstrating the drinking water supply planned for the missions. Only one pigtail monkey was flown in the programme,"Bonny",on Bios-3. Bonny had to earn his food by pushing buttons for 15 minutes at a time. Unfortunately for NASA,Bonny was more concerned by the 26 sensors implanted in his body (including six in the brain and one in each eye),and refused to eat or drink. The $96 million mission was terminated after nine of the planned 30 days. Public outrage at such cruelty ended the programme. Bonny died a few days later | |
