Optical image of the core of the Coma cluster of galaxies. Coma cluster is situated some 350 million light years away from our galaxy and is roughly 16 million light years across. The core is dominated by two giant galaxies: the elliptical NGC 4889 (middle left) and the SO type NGC 4874 (bottom right). They are surrounded by a large number of smaller galaxies which are the fuzzy and elongated objects seen here. They are mainly elliptical and SO type of galaxies. The image was obtained with blue-green,red and near infrared filters and may be considered a true colour version | |
