Newborn stars. Infrared image of a region of star formation in the Orion Molecular Cloud-1. Known as the Kleinmann-Low infrared cluster,it consists in very young stars still embedded in the cloud of dust and gas which formed the cluster by gravitational collapse. The dust (yellow) is heated by the stars to several hundred degrees Kelvin and then emits radiation at near and far infrared wavelengths. The larger red newborn star at centre right is the Becklin-Neugebauer object. UK Infrared Telescope image made at 2.2 microns | |
