New red spot on Jupiter,Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image. The Great Red Spot is at centre right, with Red Spot Junior at lower left. The new red spot (centre left) is the smallest of the three red spots, and was initially white before it turned red. The red spots are massive cyclonic storm systems. The Great Red Spot has persisted for hundreds of years, but the others are more recent (Red Spot Junior appeared in 2006). It is thought that the extra red spots are due to increased turbulence due to climate change on Jupiter, with the planet getting warmer around the equator, where the spots are located.
