| Profile of foetus. Ultrasound scan of the profile of a human foetus,aged 12 weeks. At left is the large rounded head with face (upper left). The foetal body is at lower right with limbs partly seen (centre right). At this age the foetus is about 8cm long and 45 grams in weight. This ultra- sound scan was made by Dr Philippe Saada. Saada has refined the technique of ultrasound to obtain high-definition images. Ultrasound scanning uses high-frequency sound waves to examine body tissues such as a foetus in the womb or to diagnose organ disease. Ultrasound can show whether foetal development is normal.
