| Face of a foetus. Colour ultrasound scan of a profile of the head of a human foetus,aged 5 months. At right is the rounded cranium,with the foetal face seen at upper centre. The face appears completely human with fully developed nose,lips and chin. The body is at lower left. This ultra- sound scan was made by Dr Philippe Saada. Saada has refined the technique of ultrasound to obtain high-definition images. Ultrasound scanning uses high-frequency sound waves to examine body tissues such as a foetus in the womb or to diagnose organ disease. Ultrasound can show whether foetal development is normal.
