Pancreas. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of a sectioned small vein in the pancreas. Red blood cells are seen along the wall of the blood vessel. The vein is surrounded by pancreatic cells (red) characterised on their surfaces by cytoplasmic secretory (rounded) granules. The pancreas is a major gland which has both exocrine and endocrine functions. The exocrine pancreas secretes an alkaline,enzyme-rich fluid into the duodenum via the pancreatic duct. The endocrine pancreas secretes two hormones,insulin and glucagon,which play an important role in carbohydrate metabolism. Magnification: x800 at 6x7cm size
