This organ,the largest in the human abdomen,is supplied by two major blood vessels,the hepatic artery and the portal vein (orange,right). The liver also contains arteries (red). The liver is involved in metabolism and has a number of functions in the body including detoxification,glycogen storage and plasma protein synthesis. It also produces bile from bile ducts (purple),which is important for digestion. Also found in the liver are lymph ducts (green,upper centre),which carry lymph,a fluid containing infection-fighting lymphocytes (white blood cells) |
