False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of three capillaries (blue),in the liver. They are characterised by a number of small holes through which nutrient substances may reach all liver cells. At centre a red blood cell is travelling inside a blood vessel. Two bile canaliculi (green),or cholangioles, are also visible. Bile is secreted by the liver and then drains through these canaliculi to the bile duct which carries the bile to a storage sack called the gallbladder. From the gallbladder bile is periodically released into the duodenum where it is needed for fat digestion. Magnification: x880 at 6x7cm size | |
