Spinal nerve ganglion. Light micrograph of a cross-section through a spinal nerve ganglion. This is a node of nerve cells located just outside the spinal cord at the point where it is joined by the spinal nerves that branch off from the spinal cord. This collection of nerve cells (neurones, pink, round) is responsible for processing sensory information or for coordinating impulses from other neurones. Each neurone has a nucleus (centre, not seen in all of them) and is surrounded by flattened support cells (purple) called glial cells or satellite cells. This is one of the dorsal root ganglions, where a dorsal (back) nerve joins the spinal cord. Magnification: x2500 when printed 10 centimetres wide | |
