Blood clot. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a human blood clot in a damaged blood vessel. The clot consists of threads of fibrin (light brown),an insoluble protein. These form a mesh which traps red blood cells (red),sealing the wound and preventing bleeding. Blood clots are triggered by chemicals released by platelet cells in the blood or by tissue cells at the injury site. The chemicals result in the formation of fibrin through a series of reactions. An abnormal clot (thrombus) can also occur in intact blood vessels, and is the main cause of heart attacks and strokes. Magnification unknown | |
