Eosinophil cell. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a human eosinophil cell contained within the connective tissue of an ovary. Eosinophils are white blood cells involved in immune responses to parasites and allergies. Here, the cell's bilobed nucleus (dark green) containing chromatin (light green) appears as four pieces due to sectioning. Within the cytoplasm (pink) are characteristic granules (oval). These contain enzymes responsible for bacterial destruction. Inside each granule is a dense crystal inclusion (rectangular, brown),the function of which is not known. Magnification: unknown | |
