Eosinophil cell. Coloured Transmission Electron Micrograph (TEM) of a human eosinophil cell, containing granules with crystal inclusions in its cytoplasm. Granules (red) are seen in the cell cytoplasm (orange); the large cell nucleus is yellow and purple. Eosinophils are white blood cells, known also as granulocytes for the granular cytoplasm they possess. These oval-shaped granules contain enzymes responsible for bacterial destruction. The function of the crystals is unknown. Eosinophil cells, produced in the bone marrow, play an important role in the immune response against allergic and parasitic diseases.
