Foetal red blood cells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of numerous red blood cells (erythrocytes) from a foetus. At this immature stage the red blood cells are still nucleated. When they mature the nucleus will be expelled and the cells will develop their characteristic biconcave shape. Red blood cells transport oxygen from the lungs to all the cells of the body. They also transport the waste product of respiration, carbon dioxide, back to the lungs where it is exhaled. Oxygen and carbon dioxide bind with haemoglobin, the protein that gives blood its red colour.
