Bone marrow cells. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through some bone marrow cells. One red blood cell (erythrocyte, green oval) is seen amongst many white blood cells (leucocytes). Two types of leucocytes are visible: neutrophils have multi-lobed nuclei (brown & blue) and pink cytoplasm, while myelocytes have large nuclei (pink and brown) and blue cytoplasm. Bone marrow occupies the spaces in bone and when active,is dominated by the production of red blood cells. With increasing age, bone marrow becomes less active, and fills up with fat cells.
