| False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a transverse section through a blood capillary,showing a single red blood cell in centre. A red blood cell is usually biconcave in shape,but may become distorted to enter small capillaries,which range in diameter from 3-10 micrometres. Capillary linings are made up exclusively of endothelial cells; individual cells are arranged longitudinally to the axis of the vessel. The nucleus of an endothelial cell appears at top of the sectioned capillary. At bottom right of image is a pericyte,an elongated cell of uncertain function. Magnification: x3,500 at 6x7cm size | |
