Pulmonary arteries. Coloured angiogram (X-ray) of left and right pulmonary arteries in healthy lungs. The common pulmonary artery divides (at centre, dark red) into thick left and right branches. These arteries transport deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs. In the lungs the left and right pulmonary arteries each form a network of smaller branches. Ribs of the ribcage are yellow, with the spine running from top to bottom centre. The heart is blue. To obtain this pulmonary angiogram a radio-opaque dye was injected through a catheter (pink, lower centre) into the common pulmonary artery. The dye enables the blood vessels to be detected by X-ray | |
